“Can you tell me about the most favourite thing you and your mum do together, when its just you two?”. The question was only a small part of the conversation I had with each of the 25 students in this local Primary School class for this shoot, and the answers were as many, as fascinating, completely sincere, sweet and varied as their expressions. I would not want to share the personal answers, but I think many of these images more than speak for themselves.
We printed each portrait, captured in front of the giant, beautiful, familiar gum tree in the middle of the school yard, and framed it just in time for Mother’s Day 2018, and couldn’t have wished for a more personal present to take home as a surprise.
If you are a parent or a school who like the idea of a different, expressive, personal portrait of your child and would like to create something similar for a special event or the wall, do get in touch. Making images that capture personality with a real story attached is what I would love to see more of in the world. That, after all, is what we love to be reminded of in years to come. Who was this person, ‘when’ was this person, ‘where’ was this person, ‘why’ was this person and last but not least, ‘what’ was this person thinking of.
