Making the most of the long weekend and the long warm summer days, we headed an easy hour and a half out of Hobart to the beautiful and otherworldly Mount Field National Park.
Last time we hiked there was in winter, and the kids reminded each other about the icicles they had broken off and used as icy poles. Unlike this season, this visit was all t-shirts, shorts and at times even less!
We reached Seal Lake after a little over an hour, and two of the crew just couldn’t resist the cool water of the clear lake and stripped off for a dip and swim, with the most beautiful backdrop of the ridge and wispy white clouds on blue skies. Perfectly timed it turned out, excited minutes before the arrival of an other family of hikers.
We ate a home-packed lunch, explored for fish (no luck), before continuing back on the slightly longer, up-hill hike. Heading home through the tall trees, we didn’t miss a stop at one of the local berry farms for popping fresh blackberries and crunchy cone ice creams.
A perfect way to spend half a day with the kids, enjoying some peaceful time on our own when they explored ahead on the track, whilst feeling like we’d been away for much longer because of the completely contrasting smells of the bush, sounds of the birds and wildlife, and vast landscape visions our bodies were taking in.
