Landscapes: From green to white. Hiking the dusting of kunanyi. nipaluna/lutruwita.

When the gates to the mountain is closed we take the backroads and hike to Junction Cabin for a feel of creaking snow under our boots.

Last weekend the sky was baby blue, and the air cold but tempered by the sun, as we headed along the fire-trail, greeted by two Kookaburras, native to Australia and New Guinea. Halfway to Junction Cabin the snow started covering more and more of the ground, and as we turned the corner of the tall trees, everything was white. Cue snowball fight, or snow eating, depending on whether you were a child or a Husky.

On the way down Myrtle Gully the melting snow made for a muddy and fairy gnarly descend past the gushing waterfalls and huge evergreen man ferns overhead. A bacon or mushroom egg bun from Bear with Me was all anyone could think about at this stage, and it was the perfect was to end a family hike back home in the warm living room.

Nothing quite like a white winter.
